Global Malt Lex-icon of malt whisky distilleries in the world

Welcome to the 'Global Malt Lex-icon', an overview of all malt whisky distilleries
in the whole wide world which was maintained by Lex Kraaijeveld, a world
renowned specialist in exotic whiskies and fruit flies. We have compiled a
comprehensive overview of all the MALT whisky distilleries in the world.
We are MALT maniacs, so we haven't included distilleries that produce
other types of whisky like grain whisky, rye whiskey or bourbon.

But the Lex-icon is long enough without any other 'exotic' whisky types.
For a long time, Scotland had more malt whisky distilleries than the
rest of the world combined, but that situation changed a few years ago.

Please not that this 'archived' version of the Global Lex-icon was last
updated in 2010. Check out the new Malt Maniacs website for possible
later versions. Alternatively, you could visit the 'Deviant Drams' section
on Malt Madness for more information & tasting notes for many different
'world whiskies' - as well as a number of other alcoholic beverages.

These days, the fine art of malt whisky distillation
has spread all around the world. You can now
find malt whisky distilleries in the rest of Europe
but this type of whisky has made it to Asia, Africa,
Australia, North America and even South America too.

For your browsing convenience, Lex has produced a
'checklist' version of the Lex-icon in PDF format that
you can use to cross as many distilleries as possible off
your 'to do' list - if that's your sort of thing... Furthermore,
Lex has been writing WhiskyLogs since 1994. PDF versions
of these logs are hosted on WhiskyFun and can be reached
via the links below. And before we get to the actual Lex-icon,
Here are a few words from Lex himself about his discoveries;

MM Archives - Home

And that were all the active (and recently closed) malt whisky distilleries in Scotland (at least the ones we know of). You can find some more
information about these Scottish malt whisky distilleries in the Distillery Data section of Malt Madness. On this page you can find all 'essentials'
about the malt distilleries (active & inactive) situated outside Scotland. Meanwhile, here's a short 'legend' for the colours and abbreviations.

"Since I discovered single malts, I've kept yearly personal log books of all whiskies
(malts and others) I ever drank, including brief tasting notes for most. If you're
interested, you can download these logs in .pdf-format and read where my whisky
journey has taken me so far. I was introduced to single malts by a friend of mine,
Christine Müller, when I had just moved to England for a research job at Imperial
College. Christine was to be my office mate at Imperial and soon after I had settled
in she invited me for dinner. After the food she
asked whether I drank whisky and put three
bottles on the table. At that time, my whisky
experience was limited to the occasional
blended Scotch and the term 'single malt'
had no meaning for me. One of
the three bottles on the table
was a Lagavulin 16 y.o."

"As Christine said that Lagavulin was something special.
So I poured myself some of that and the rest, as they say, is history.
I was amazed at the depth of flavour, the smoke, the peat; Lagavulin will always
be a special dram to me. Got myself a copy of Michael Jackson's "Companion", got
a few bottles from different regions and then the whole thing took off. Besides
whisky itself, I am also very interested in the history of (whisky) distillation, in
the British Isles and worldwide. I like to get off the beaten track and taste malt
whiskies from countries other than Scotland and Ireland. Also, it's a bit of a sport
for me trying to get my hands on the most obscure and unusual 'whiskies' this
wee planet has to offer .... Laotian Snake Whisky anyone?"

A few footnotes;

(1) - Cooley distillery in Ireland produces an extensive range of brands.
Connemara, Tyrconnell, Locke's, Kilbeggan, Millars and Inishowen are just a few of them.

(2) - Theoretically, Midleton distillery in Ireland distills 'for blending only' (FBO).
However, somebody got hold of some casks and bottled those under the name 'Erin Go Bragh'.
Tasting notes and a picture can be found in Lex's 'Irish' E-pistle.

(3) - The Roggenhof distillery in Austria uses both rye and barley for two different whiskies.
These whiskies are available under the names 'Roggenmalzwhisky' and 'Gerstenmalzwhisky'.

(4) - Distillerie des Menhirs in France uses a mixture of malted and unmalted buckwheat for their 'Eddu' whisky.
We have been informed that a 'proper' malt whisky should be released in the future. Watch this page for news...

(5) - The German 'Blaue Maus' distillery has released a wide range of bottlings under sometimes hilarious names.
Some examples: Blaue Maus (blue mouse), Gruner Hund (green dog) Schwarzer Pirat, Spinnaker and Krottentaler.

(6) - Whiskyschip isn't a 'distillery' in the sense that it's a seperate building you can visit. It's a 'still set'.
That still set is rented out to others and used once a year at the 'Whiskyshiff' festival in Zurich.

(7) - The only African malt distillery (we know of) used to be the James Sedgwick Distillery in South Africa.
According to their website the company was established 1886 in Wellington, in the Cape Winelands.
Recently the Drayman's distillery was added.

(8) - The Indian distilleries Kasauli and Mohan Nagar use both pot stills (P) and column stills (Co).
Kasauli uses its column still predominently for malt while Mohan Nagar seems to mostly use the pot still.

(9) - The Tasmania Distillery in, you guessed it, Tasmania, produces the Sullivan's Cove and Old Hobart brands.
Tasmania Distillery is easily confused with the defunct 'Small Concern' (www.tasmanianwhisky.com.au) distillery.

(10) - The Kittling Ridge distillery produces 'Forty Creek' Canadian whiskies containing the malt whisky.

(11) - Brands from the Okanagan distillery in Canada are Glen Ogopogo (seriously) and perhaps (?) Long Wood.

(12) - The Anchor distillery (California, USA) uses rye instead of barley.

And that concludes the last 'archived' version of the Global Lex-icon, updated in November 2010.
Check out the new Malt Maniacs website for possible later versions - or the 'Deviant Drams' section on Malt Madness for
information and tasting notes for many different 'world whiskies' - as well as a growing number of other alcoholic beverages.

XXX

DISTILLERY = Well, that's pretty self explanatory. Old brown is for silent stills, fresh green for very recent projects.
STATUS = Indicates the century in which the distillery was established; green for active, red for inactive distilleries.
STILLS = The type of stills; Pot (P), Column (Co), Charentais (Ch), Faraday (F), Eau-de-vie (E) and Jenever (J).
BRANDS = The brands or 'labels' of the available whiskies, if not 'For Blending Only' (FBO) or 'Not Bottled Yet' (NBY).
WEBSITE = The URL of the website, plain and simple. Please let us know if you know a site we haven't listed.

So, without further ado, we give you...
